A Christmas backdrop at home works for phone snapshots: a lit tree, a plain wall and window light are enough. For the card photo, a decorated set is easier. Below: five DIY setups, why home backdrops look busy, and what a set changes.
I photograph families in Riverdale, Yonkers and lower Westchester, and every November the same question comes up: "Can't we just do it in front of our tree?" Often you can. This guide shows how, and where the honest limits are.
The short answer: home backdrop for snapshots, decorated set for the card
A home backdrop costs you an afternoon of moving furniture and maybe a garland. A decorated set costs money but no setup, and someone else handles the light.
| DIY backdrop at home | Decorated studio set | Outdoor mini, no set | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Free to the cost of a garland | $229 total per family | $129 |
| Time | An hour or two of setup | 20 minutes | 20 minutes |
| Who takes the photo | You, with a timer or a tripod | Me | Me |
| Retouched images | None | 5 | 3 |
| Weather | Not a factor | Indoors, not a factor | Rain moves the session free |
If you want the whole family in the frame, including whoever usually holds the phone, you'll need a tripod and a remote. My holiday card photo gear guide covers the few pieces worth buying.

Five DIY Christmas photo backdrops that photograph well at home
Each of these works in an ordinary apartment or house. One tip each, because one fix usually matters more than five.
- The tree corner. Put the tree to one side of the frame, not dead center behind heads. Tip: pull everyone at least six feet in front of the tree so the lights soften into glow.
- A plain wall with garland. Hang a garland in a loose swag across a bare wall, and seat the family below it. Tip: keep the garland above head height so it never sprouts out of someone's hair.
- Window light with string lights behind. Face the family toward a window and hang string lights on the wall behind them. Tip: shoot on your phone's portrait mode so the lights turn into soft circles.
- A bedsheet seamless. Clip a wrinkle-free cream or gray sheet to a curtain rod and let it run down to the floor. Tip: steam it first; every crease shows on camera.
- The staircase. Wrap the banister in garland and stack the family on the steps, kids lower. Tip: sit everyone on different steps so no face hides behind another.
For what everyone should wear against each of these, my Christmas outfit ideas for families has palettes that work for a cream wall, a tree and a red set.
Why most home backdrops look busy in photos
Three things make a living-room photo look like a living room instead of a card: clutter, mixed light colors and too little distance.
Clutter. The camera sees everything the eye ignores: the remote on the couch, a laundry basket, the outlet under the tree. Before you shoot, look at the frame on the phone screen, not the room, and clear whatever shows.
Mixed light colors. Warm bulbs sit around 2,700 to 3,000 K on the color temperature scale, while daylight runs about 5,500 to 6,500 K.
Mix a warm lamp on one side with a window on the other and faces turn orange on one cheek and blue on the other. Turn off the lamps and use the window; let only the tree lights stay on.
Too little distance. Light falls off fast with distance (the inverse-square law), so a family standing right against the wall shares its brightness and its shadow. My own rule at home: at least six feet between people and backdrop. In a small apartment, that alone often decides between the tree corner and the plain wall.

What a decorated studio set gives you: Red & Gold or White Winter
My Christmas Studio Set Days are indoors in a rented studio in Yonkers. Two decorated sets stand side by side in the same room, and you pick one when you book. It's $229 total per family for 20 minutes, with 5 retouched images in a private online gallery.
| Red & Gold | White Winter | |
|---|---|---|
| The look | Classic and warm | Light and airy |
| Tree | Decorated tree with red and gold ornaments | Snow-flocked trees with silver ornaments |
| Seating | Burgundy velvet loveseat | Cream sofa |
| Outfits that work | Cream, camel, forest green, navy | Cream, soft gray, burgundy, deep green |
| Outfits to skip | Bright red head to toe (it disappears into the set) | All white (faces lose their edge) |

The set solves the three problems above before you arrive. Nothing is out of place, the light is one color, and there's room to step away from the backdrop. It's also warm inside, so nobody needs a coat over their outfit.

Outdoors with no set: the $129 Christmas Family Mini
Some families don't want a living room at all, not even a decorated one. The Christmas Family Mini is $129 for 20 minutes outdoors in the park, with 3 retouched images. No set: just your family, late-fall color and good light.
It's the better choice when your kids run better than they sit, or when you want the card to look like the season outside. If rain arrives, the session moves at no charge. My Untermyer Park holiday photoshoot guide shows what a Yonkers garden looks like in late fall.
Both the mini and the set day are on the holiday card photos page, side by side.
How to book a set day and what to bring
Set days are rolling: the minis page shows one open date at a time. When I wrote this, the open date was Saturday, November 21, with six family spots. Check the page for what's showing today.
- Pick the date and your 20-minute time on /minis.
- Pay online; the spot is yours. Booking closes 2 days before each date.
- Choose Red & Gold or White Winter, then plan outfits around it.
Arrive dressed, shoes included. Bring a hairbrush and a snack for small kids to have after. Bookings are non-refundable, and rescheduling is free with 48 hours' notice. If you're still comparing photographers near you, my Christmas photoshoot guide for the Bronx, Yonkers and Westchester lays out the options, and the Yonkers photographer page shows where else I shoot in the city.
